- PFAS is the collective term for more than 12,000 chemicals. They are used in packaging, plastics, paint, adhesives, carpets, electronics, lubricants and so on.
- They are known as “forever chemicals” as they are extremely persistent in our environment and bodies. They can lead to health problems such as liver damage, thyroid disease, obesity, fertility issues and cancer.
- Areas where PFAS have been used heavily in production have led to the groundwater to be contaminated.
- The regional governments are responsible for cleaning the groundwater, but at the moment the existing technology is expensive and inefficient.
- The only contaminated place that is being cleaned up right now is Copenhagen Airport. The airport itself – in dialogue with the region and the municipality – has set up treatment plants that clean the contaminated groundwater using a series of carbon filters.
