In 1977, Faroe Islands made a fishing agreement with Russia. Since then, the agreement has been renewed every year. Russian ships can fish for herring, mackerel and blue whiting in Faroese waters and Faroese ships can fish for cod and haddock in Russian waters. Despite initially wanting to end the agreement, the Faroese leaders realized that it would harm the economy too much and decided to continue.
