From California to Denmark: the love story of Bloomtree Tech

-

Håndværkervej 24B, 9000 Aalborg, sometime during spring 2023

The place and time of my first encounter with Sebastian, a young Australian with Chilean roots who moved to Aalborg four years ago so that he could start a family with his Danish wife. Love brought him to Denmark, but it was the people of Denmark that convinced him to expand his business to Aalborg. More exactly, it was their attitude towards the environment and money.

A big smile and a welcoming attitude brightened my mood as I stepped into the world of Bloomtree Tech in Aalborg. Guided by Sebastian, I ventured through the office and further into the warehouse, immersing myself in a truly international workplace where Danish, Spanish, English, and German languages intertwined in a lively and dynamic manner. California’s essence was very much alive within the team spirit of Aalborg.

As our conversation unfolded, I discovered that some of the young people in the office are actually there through a program called Erasmus+ from Germany and Austria. Sebastian found the idea of giving young people from outside Denmark the chance to experience a Danish workplace to be very rewarding. There is a genuine cultural exchange between the young Danes and the Erasmus+ trainees in the office, reflected during lunch time and after-work activities.

One of the trainees brings a laptop to Sebastian. I move aside and watch the dialogue between mentor and mentee. The mentee is proudly showing how a key issue was solved. The mentor is quick to show its gratitude for the mentee initiative and gives him further liberty to pursue similar initiatives. In the world of IT refurbishment, every extra year of life given to an IT product (laptop, tablet, workstation, etc.) reduces electronic waste and the demand for new products. So every time someone from Bloomtree Tech is able to grade a product within the highest tier, the mood of the whole team skyrockets. They know why they are in this business and what motivates them to get up in the morning.

Out of nowhere, Sebastian points towards several boxes prepared in the corner and asks if we have workstations for our volunteers at Last Week in Denmark. He discloses that he has read our newsletter for a while now, and that’s mainly the reason for the invitation. He wants to somehow contribute to our mission to “empower people with information” and decided to give us the tools through which we can gather, distillate, and disseminate the information.

In his own words, “I think the purpose of “Last Week in Denmark” is significant. As an expatriate in Denmark, regardless of how deeply one integrates into society and culture, there are inevitable moments of feeling out of place or a longing for home. While the locals might be welcoming and pleasant, there’s an inherent sentiment of feeling like an outsider that occasionally surfaces. “Last Week in Denmark” offers a sense of community, providing a platform for individuals like me to connect with others who share similar experiences. Furthermore, it helps keep us informed and in touch with the ongoing events and happenings in the country we’ve chosen to reside in.”

Fast forward a couple of weeks, and Bloomtree Tech makes a surprise visit at the office in Aalborg, with a donation of five working stations for our volunteers. An amazing gift that further strengthens the progress of the Last Week in Denmark project.

Following tradition, we extended a warm invitation for coffee and took the opportunity to delve deeper into the company’s mission, as revealed in the interview excerpt below.

What is Bloomtree Tech?

An IT asset management and reseller company founded in 2021 in California by founders with extensive experience in technology solutions and great networking skills. We managed to secure relationships with leading companies at the top of the secondary market supply chain, which allowed us to acquire IT equipment at very competitive prices.

Why Bloomtree Tech?

An opportunity to offer consumers cost-effective alternatives to brand-new IT equipment and the chance to participate in the circular economy. As young founders, we see sustainability and environmental responsibility as key values. By reintroducing IT assets back into the cycle, we are actively reducing waste and keeping invaluable raw materials out of landfills.

As technology advances and our dependency grows, we need to rethink our purchasing habits. A lot of e-waste is created from products we consider obsolete, even though they still have a useful life. Less than one-quarter of e-waste is recycled. Bloomtree’s vision for the future is for more technology to be repaired, reused, or recycled to extend the life of assets and materials. We aim to set an example for the industry—a company that positively impacts the environment through our sustainable strategies—so that the trend towards a circular economy continues to grow.

How was the move to Denmark?

Thanks to Denmark’s advanced level of digitalization, the move was smoother than expected. Setting up a business here turned out to be relatively straightforward, largely due to the great support we received. Numerous government-funded institutions stepped in to guide us through the process, and their willingness to communicate in English was a significant relief.

How difficult it is to operate in two worlds at the same time?

From an operational standpoint, there are undeniable challenges. Centralizing processes becomes a difficult task when dealing with two different jurisdictions, each having its distinct accounting practices and consumer laws. Ensuring compliance in both regions is important. But with the assistance of both our internal teams and external local aid, combined with numerous late-night calls with our US counterparts, we can make it happen.

Who is Bloomtree Tech?

At the heart of Bloomtree there is a diverse team, each member pivotal in ensuring seamless operations. Every individual, irrespective of their role, is instrumental to our success.

Who is Sebastian?

The director of Bloomtree Technologies ApS. A 37-year-old Australian with Chilean roots, that used to work in finance before venturing into the world of IT asset management. I used to live in Sydney before moving to London in 2013 with my Danish wife. Four years ago, we decided that time has come to start a family and we decided to move to Aalborg, my wife’s hometown. For us it was important to be closer to the family.

What is Bloomtreeit.dk

Our recently launched webshop where you can buy refurbished IT at the best price on the market.

At Bloomtree Technologies, we extend the life of high-quality used electronics, meeting the demand for better value devices compared to new. We achieve this by bringing fully functional and cosmetically appropriate devices to market. Too many electronic devices end up in landfills because they are considered too old or useless by previous owners. We take them in, refurbish and repair them, and offer a minimum 3-year warranty to provide the best value for people looking for both affordability and quality. By buying refurbished technology, our customers save money and at the same time play their part in a circular economy — getting more out of our valuable resources which would otherwise be used in the production of new products.
