Inside Out with Adrienn – episode 2

-

The Cost of Ignoring Yourself

You can build a life that looks perfect from the outside – 🌍 integrate into a new culture, meet expectations, check all the right boxes – and still feel like something is… off.

You know that feeling? Like something is missing, but you can’t quite put your finger on it? The cost of ignoring yourself is real – but the good news is, reconnecting doesn’t require drastic change – just a shift towards tuning in and listening to yourself again.

Because tuning yourself out isn’t just a habit – it’s a quiet erosion of who you are.

🔍 The Unseen Toll of Disconnection

There’s a curious thing about silence – it can hold power. In moments of overwhelm, it soothes, offering refuge from the noise of the world. But when it comes to our inner world, silence can erode. The quiet neglect of our own thoughts, emotions, and the voice within doesn’t happen in an instant – it unfolds gradually, slipping beneath the surface unnoticed.

And yet, over time, the cost of this neglect compounds in ways we don’t always recognise until something feels… off.

We move through life responding to expectations, fulfilling obligations, and navigating the roles we play. It’s easy to assume that as long as everything is running smoothly, we must be fine too. But are we? Beneath the surface of “fine,” something quieter stirs – subtle signs that we’ve been tuning ourselves out.

Ignoring ourselves isn’t always dramatic. It’s not a single moment of realisation but a slow unravelling. The discomfort doesn’t announce itself loudly. Instead, it seeps into the cracks of everyday life:

😤 Irritability without a clear cause. Small things set you off, but when you pause, you realise it’s not about them – it’s about you.

😕 A vague sense of dissatisfaction. Life looks “fine” on the outside, yet something feels misaligned, as though a quiet, unspoken truth is being ignored.

🤯 Overthinking decisions but avoiding the deeper question. You analyse every angle, convincing yourself you’re being practical, but the real answer – the one that feels right – remains buried beneath all the justifications.

But why do we do this?

Sometimes, it’s fear – fear of what we might uncover if we sit with ourselves long enough to listen. Other times, it’s simply habit; we’ve been conditioned to prioritise external demands over internal reflection. And then there’s the relentless pace of modern life, which equates productivity with purpose, as if the measure of a day’s worth is what we’ve accomplished rather than how aligned we feel.

And for those of us who have moved to a new country, this disconnection can feel even more layered. When we make the choice to move into a new culture, we also make an unspoken commitment to integrate – to find our place, to belong. 🌎 Therefore, we learn the language, understand social norms, and navigate unspoken expectations. Integration is both a privilege and an obligation, but it doesn’t have to come at the cost of losing ourselves.

The truth is, we don’t have to choose between integration and authenticity. They can exist together. 💡 We can embrace new ways of living while still holding on to the core of who we are. And if you’ve ever felt the complexity of this more deeply because of your journey, know that you’re not alone – it’s a natural part of finding your place in a new world.

But here’s what we forget: unacknowledged emotions don’t disappear. They find other ways to surface. Maybe it’s through restlessness, decision paralysis, strained relationships, or even physical exhaustion. The cost of ignoring yourself is rarely immediate – but it is inevitable.

🛤 The Path Back to Yourself

The good news? Reconnection doesn’t require upheaval. It begins in small, deliberate moments of awareness.

For me, it often starts with five quiet minutes of journaling 📖 – not to solve anything, just to witness my own thoughts without judgement. Sometimes, it’s a walk without distractions 🚶‍♀️, letting thoughts rise to the surface. Other times, it’s simply asking myself:

🧐 What do I need today?

Reconnecting with yourself isn’t about having all the answers – it’s about creating space for the questions. This is what I call “Authenticity in Motion” – unscripted growth that moves with you, not against you. It’s the philosophy I have developed and live by, both personally and professionally.

Because growth isn’t a perfectly linear process. It’s not about forcing a transformation overnight but about making room for who you are becoming.

When we allow ourselves to be in motion – curious, adaptable, open – we stop fighting against ourselves and start moving with ourselves. And that’s where real change happens. ✨

🧠 The Science Behind It All

Self-awareness isn’t just a concept – it’s the foundation of emotional intelligence and intentional living. Research highlights just how much we overestimate our own awareness. While nearly everyone assumes they know themselves well, studies suggest otherwise. Research indicates that while 95% of people think they have a solid understanding of themselves, only about 10–15% actually do (Eurich, 2018).

And it’s not just about clarity of thought – it’s about well-being. Studies show that fostering positive emotions and deeper self-connection isn’t just good for mental health; it can actually extend lifespan (Harvard Health Publishing, 2021).

I was recently reminded of this while reading an article by Ann Betz (PCC, CPCC), a colleague and inspiration, who explores how levels of consciousness can be expanded. She highlights four key factors:

🧐 Realisation – Cultivating awareness, bringing things into presence.

⚖️ Regulation – Managing triggers, recovering from stressors.

🤝 Integration – Becoming more personally and interpersonally differentiated and linked.

🔄 Stabilisation – Wiring in new thoughts and behaviours.

These four steps remind me that growth isn’t about radical change – it’s about small, consistent shifts that help us reconnect with who we are.

🌟 Bringing It All Together

So, when was the last time you truly listened to yourself? Not just the fleeting thoughts that drift in before sleep, but the deeper truths that sit beneath the surface, waiting to be acknowledged.

❗ Ask Yourself:

  • What’s one decision I’ve made recently that didn’t feel true to me? Why?
  • When was the last time I felt completely in sync with myself? What was I doing?
  • If I had to name one thing I’ve been avoiding listening to within myself, what might it be?

Reconnecting with yourself is less about striving for balance and more about choosing alignment. It’s about noticing – what energises you, what drains you, what feels undeniably true. And with that awareness comes something powerful: choice.

And that brings us back to where we started. Silence can hold power. But when silence becomes a habit of avoidance, it erodes. The cost of ignoring yourself isn’t just feeling off-track – it’s losing connection with the person you were always meant to be.

As Lao Tzu once said, “At the centre of your being, you have the answer; you know who you are, and you know what you want.”

But here’s the thing: it’s never too late to listen again.

Taking a moment to reflect can be the first step towards bridging the gap between who you are and who you want to be. Listen – your own inner voice is calling. 🔊✨
