Sweden and Finland have applied to join NATO

-

The two countries have ended decades of neutrality in the face of the Russian danger. What are the next steps?

  • Article 10 of NATO’s founding treaty states that, once a nation has expressed interest, the existing member states “may, by unanimous agreement, invite any other European State in a position to further the principles of this Treaty … to accede.
  • Ratification of new members could take a year, as the legislatures of all 30 current members must approve new applicants.
  • Turkey has already expressed that they are against Sweden and Finland joining NATO. Negotiations are going on to convince Turkey otherwise.
