The no-border area is expanded from 2023 with one more EU state: Croatia. Romania and Bulgaria also applied to join, but were blocked due to the veto from Austria. The Netherlands also had a veto against Bulgaria. There are 27 countries in the Schengen Area (23 EU member states plus Iceland, Norway, Switzerland and Liechtenstein).
