Rafael’s Story

It was 13 years ago that Rafael Andrasescu relocated to Denmark from his home country of Romania. His move was prompted by the promise of a job as a newspaper carrier for DAO. He worked hard and, within a year, began working in the cleaning industry. He even tried his hand at opening his own cleaning business. All of which led to him landing a position as a consultant with the 3F Union (Fagligt Fælles Forbund). This was where he found himself representing blue-collar workers and service sector employees. It all ignited a drive to help others, to share his knowledge, and to represent the everyday worker.

When asked how he initially found life in Denmark, his response is simple. “It was tricky, with the culture, especially the language. It took a few years to fully settle”. The key to settling? Learning the language. His language journey is one of dedication. Though interestingly, he did not attend formal language lessons for very long; instead, he opted to learn the language conversationally through Danish friends. “One day over coffee, I told my friends, don’t speak to me in English anymore. From this day on, only Danish”. And thus began his journey to fluency.

When asked if he feels like Denmark is home, it’s a resounding “yes!”. He may originally be from Romania, but culturally, he feels that he absolutely belongs in Denmark, and it’s not only home to him, but his two young children.

Entering Politics

Five years ago, in a discussion with Narcis Matache (founding editor of Last Week in Denmark), Rafael was encouraged to enter the world of politics. It wasn’t pre-planned; instead, it was a bit serendipitous, and deeply driven by an interest in helping his community. He went on to meet with the Social Democratic Party and quickly realized his views and values aligned. “I didn’t feel like an outsider. Politics in Denmark is very different from Romania. It’s not just the academics or the wealthy who get involved, but also everyday people with real-life, lived experience.” He felt a great sense of belonging and acceptance.

Rafael’s Campaign

Rafael believes that through his own lived experience, he has acquired a strong understanding of how the system works in Denmark. But he emphasises this isn’t about him, rather it’s about sharing the knowledge he has gained. When you can offer a helping hand, why wouldn’t you?

When asked about the focus of his campaign, Rafael was eager to discuss the youth in his community. “I want to help the kids who struggle with criminality. To avoid gangs and to make better decisions. Ultimately, to support a positive integration experience for International kids.” This isn’t just talk, either, as he’s already a proud member of the National Integration Council, working hard to ensure the voices of Internationals, especially those of youth, are heard. He believes in the impact of youth services in the form of activities and clubs. There’s great power in community. “I’m not Superman, but I like to help where I can, with the knowledge that I have”. Rafael briefly mentions the issue of parking and the need for more of it in Randers. Which, of course, is something that he intends to address.

Final Thoughts

“Use your right to vote. Make your voice count. Vote, vote, vote! It’s so important. Do your research and find the candidate and party that resonates with your values and beliefs.” It’s safe to say that Rafael believes in the power of democracy. He also strongly encourages all Internationals to spend time and energy learning the language. “It opens possibilities, opens doors, and opens up your life”.
